Dear Sutton Parents and Families:
Welcome to the Spring Season of School at Sutton! As we head into the weeks leading up to Spring Break I wanted to share some school updates. Sutton is student strong with a number of recent accolades earned by our students. Our Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) students, won more awards at the District Technology Fair than any other middle school. Our Reading Bowl Team placed second in the District Competition and we completed our Winter Sports Season with great results, including a First Place Win for our Competitive Cheer Team and an undefeated regular season for our Boys’ Basketball along with a Second Place finish in the district tournament. Finally, if you have not yet seen our Black History Month Program through the online link, you will absolutely want to view the amazing talent showcased in the performances. Whether it is academics, sports, cultural activities or clubs, Sutton students are excelling. Our teachers and staff are truly dedicated to fostering your students in all of their middle school pursuits.
As we head into our Milestone testing program, I want to stress the importance of student attendance daily, and for the entire day. I understand that at times appointments are necessary, but I would ask you to schedule them in the morning and have your child arrive late to school which allows us to write a pass and send them directly to their classroom. Student check outs during the day require us to interrupt the instructional environment in the classroom and it is vital that we preserve the focus in the upcoming weeks. Cumulatively when multiple parents check out students during the day it adds up to significant lost instructional time.
I would like to announce two of our newest staff members.
The classes of the late Ms. Robin Norwood are being taught by Ms. Shatara Ross, who has rejoined our staff. Many of you may know her because she taught at Sutton last year! Her integration of technology and love of science has been evident since she has rejoined our staff. Also joining our staff is Ms. Stacey Collier. Ms. Collier will be teaching our Business Technology classes for the remainder of the year as Ms. Kameelah Chase has taken a position in another school district. We wish Ms. Chase the absolute best in her new role. Ms. Chase has been working with Ms. Collier to assure a smooth transition for our students.
As the weather gets warmer, (though I do not think it ever was cold this winter!) please be certain your child is dressed within our dress code for school each day. In addition, middle school students get a bit antsy this time of the year, so I ask that you assist in reinforcing the expectations we all have for our students and please reach out to any administrator or counselor for any concern that may come your way.
Within the near future you will be receiving Mid-Semester grades, schedule previews for next year and other information regarding our end of the year activities. Please be certain to look for this communication to come home and, again, reach out to us if you have any questions. Finally, if you have not already done so, please take time to read our School Strategic Plan developed by our GO Team that is on our web site. This plan forms the foundation and focus of Sutton Middle School for the next three years and is the result of a collaboration of parents, teachers, and community input.
